A dedicated team of professionals

Pace was founded on the belief that we can help small businesses thrive, through clear, expert HR support made easy. We are bespoke by default, there are no call centres, no copy-paste policies. Every client gets tailored, considered support - because no two businesses are the same, and neither are the people inside them. We have clear internal values of Pride, Courage and Wellbeing, these shape internally and externally how we operate.

Charlotte Anderson

Founder

Charlotte or Charlie, is one of our Founders. Charlie has over 15 years experience in the world of HR across a variety of industries, but she can bore you in person about those stories.

The last few years have been a journey of highs and lows, but the main reason for Charlotte being part of this founding duo is because she believes that small businesses need better, more bespoke HR support, than a big corporate could give them. Who knows their business, who "gets it", who doesn't have to explain the situation over and over again because you are constantly talking to someone new.

So what you need to know about Charlie:

  • She grew up on a Farm in East Yorkshire, so loves being able to support food and agricultural clients.

  • She is the mum of two very energetic boys, plus a small dog called Rolo.

  • She is constantly wondering how we can embed our values more - Pride, Wellbeing and Courage

She is most Proud of "Pace, the Team and our Clients, how much I still love it and every day I am still learning/developing myself both personally and professionally"

Charlie's top tip "Don't forget about the people, they are the reason your business exists so have them at the forefront of your decision making, whilst remembering you will never please everyone".

Sarah Hyland

Founder

Sarah, is our other Founder!

Sarah had an itch to build a business that was meaningful, genuine and stood the test of time. A few years in and there's not a day she hasn't had real Pride in what Pace has become. That is not to say it hasn't come with stress, but nothing great comes easy.

Prior to a life in consultancy Sarah had an extensive career working in People Management roles and HR across multiple industries. She has a passion for delivering bespoke HR services and to understand like-minded businesses in a way that allows us at Pace to get to know our clients and provide authentic and personalised support - it is what she is good at!

What you need to know about Sarah:

  • One of the drivers of Pace was to advocate for the Wellbeing of herself and others

  • Londoner born and bread, she currently splits her time between London and San Francisco, but her heart is really in Cyprus!

  • She loves enjoying nature, throwing heavy things around the gym, travelling and walking (dragging) her stubborn miniature dachshund Bruce around town

Sarah is most Proud of "Practicing what I've preached for years in building a business that puts culture first, after that all other decision making falls into place. That and going back to my roots really knowing the clients we partner with at Pace. In the past i'd been absorbed into a large corporate consultancy, ending up managing what felt like a conveyor belt of HR advice. Building close relationships and not offering generic advice, feels great."

Sarah's top tip "Don't be a dick and be straight with people. It may feel awkward for you in the moment, but it pays off in the long run, earns you respect as a manager and really, your feedback just gets lost if you aren't direct with it."

Cara Holdstock

HR Business Partner

Cara joined us back in 2022, and since then has been irreplaceable to many of our clients, originally from Australia, trained in musical theatre, she brings energy, enthusiasm and care to you that is electric. Cara is part of Vic's team and supports many of our lovely clients on site and remotely.

In addition to the above, what you need to know about Cara:

  • She is currently studying for her CIPD Level 7 alongside working full time

  • She is a multi-tasking master, dipping into multiple industries and cultures on a day to day basis, switching those hats to give the best advice for them

  • She is a true Pace culture champ, spearheading our internal socials and parties

  • She was completely thrown in at the deep end being employee number 3, which means she is all in, no problem too big or small and her learning accelerated quickly!

Cara's proudest moment is taking the leap of faith and moving to the UK when she was 20. There have been plenty of ups and downs along the way, but that journey lead her to discover her passion for HR. She believes that she wouldn't be where she is today if she hadn't taken that first bold step!

Cara's HR top tip, is don't be afraid to try and push for better - whether it is better offerings, better practices, or better flexibility. Just because you are used to how things are now (which can sometimes be the bare minimum), doesn't mean you shouldn't ask for more. The worst that can happen is that you hear "no" the best that can happen is that you help change employees' livelihoods for the better.

Emma Dunning

Director

Emma joined the Pace team as another Director of the Business back in October 2023, but feels like she has been with us FOREVER!

Emma used to work in a previous consultancy life with our Founders, it was just the three of them. Before rejoining Charlie and Sarah, Emma was the HR Director of a National Compliance and Saas business, and has been a HR Director of businesses that have a global footprint.

Now, she is the go to HRD for the majority of our client base, and she supports our three Senior HRBPs.

Emma's CV speaks for itself, but what you need to know about her:

  • She is a dog mum to the very lovable Dennis, and as a client you may get asked if it is ok for him to tag along.

  • She loves a complicated but juicy Employee Relations case - and has some insane examples of this, when enough time has passed to share.

  • She has CIPD Chartered Fellow status

  • You will be hard pushed to find anyone with more practical HR experience, than Emma - she has truly seen it all.

  • She is hard working, commercial and strategic, she will think about you as a business, what you are trying to achieve ensuring you get there.

Emma is Proud of not following the traditional career route to get to where she is now. She started her career as a HR Apprentice, more by luck than judgment, and has worked hard to get her where she is today - without the traditional routes of university, an under-graduate degree or a grad scheme. When she started her HR career her HR Manager at the time, set out her "HR Career" for her, including qualifications and accreditations with the final step in it becoming a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD. As a result of this, Emma was super proud to receive this accreditation in 2020 and being able to utilise her years of experience for Pace clients.

Her top HR tip is "Don't avoid the difficult conversations, the longer you leave them, the harder they are to have".

James sits within Sophie's team, which internally is named Team Falcon, as a Team they have carved out a bit of a FinTech/Agricultural niche…random, we know. But a great variety.

What you need to know about James:

  • He has a Psychology Degree and currently studying whilst working full time for his CIPD Level 7.

  • He loves a bit of technology, be this AI or just getting the right HRIS working for you and your business, he is the guy.

  • James is also our Pace foodie, supporting Cara in our Pace socials by digging out the BEST places to eat for us.

He is analytical, passionate and witty, and will always get the right result for you, your business and your employees.

James is most Proud of mastering Excel formulas and AI tools, just enough to look like a wizard to those who haven't tried them.

James' HR top tip is "you can lead your teams to ChatGPT, but you can't make them think. Teach your teams how to use AI and automation, not just that it exists.

A rare find in the world of Human Resources. James joined us fresh out of the Metropolitan Police, where he certainly picked up a tip or two about investigations. Which in the world of Small Business HR Support, is a pretty handy trait!

Her HR top tip is "Encourage the people leaders in your business to focus on embracing their teams' diverse perspectives, and different working ways to encourage innovation, get the best out of their people, and help them achieve their full potential in their roles. Ultimately, it's a Company's people who will help them be successful, and listening to what your team needs to do their best work, is probably a good place to start!"
