What is statutory sick pay, and do I have to pay it?

Yes, you must pay Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). SSP is the legal minimum employers must pay when an employee is off sick, and the amount can be found on the HMRC website. From April 2026, SSP became a day one right, meaning employees should receive SSP from their first day of sickness absence.
